A Broadway-en 1964-ben bemutatott, nagysikerű Hegedűs a háztetőn története egy kis ukrán faluban, Anatevkában játszódik az 1900-as évek elején. Anatevka közössége hagyománytisztelő, összetartó kis közösség, ahol mindenkinek megvan a megszokott és elfogadott szerepe a rabbitól a házasságközvetítőn át Tevjéig, a tejesemberig, aki feleségével Goldével és öt lányával él és próbál túlélni.
A mindennapi megélhetésért folytatott harc és az eladósorban levő lányok jövője nem kis fejtörést okoznak Tevjének, ő azonban rendíthetetlen hittel ragaszkodik vallásához és a hagyományokhoz, a változások kora azonban gyökeret ver az ő házában is, és akár akarja, akár nem, ez felforgatja családja megszokott életét. Tevje változni és változtatni kényszerül, ám a problémák nem csitulnak, a békés kis falu életét ellenségeskedés és zavargások háborítják. A zsidó közösséget a megsemmisülés fenyegeti, kiűzetnek a faluból, ám az újrakezdés reménye tovább élteti a hitet.
Nagysikerű, humoros musical egy zsidó család külső kényszerek és belső vágyak által irányított életéről egy viharos történelmi időben, de leginkább a változó világokról és a mindenkori értékrendről, arról, hogy mit jelent emberség, család, hit, közösség és összetartás.

Cunoscutul muzical Scripcarul pe acoperiş a avut premiera pe Broadway, în anul 1964. Povestea se desfășoară la începutul anilor 1900, în Anatevka, un mic sat ucrainean. Comunitatea din Anatevka este una solidară, care respectă tradiția, în cadrul acestei societăţi restrânse fiecare având un rol foarte clar definit, de la rabin până la peţitoare, sau la Tevie, lăptarul, care – alături de soția sa Golde și de cele cinci fiice – încearcă să supraviețuiască.
Lupta zilnică pentru asigurarea traiului şi a viitorului fiicelor, care vor fi curând la vârsta măritişului, îi dau mari bătăi de cap lui Tevie. Cu toate acestea, continuă să creadă cu fermitate în propria religie şi rămâne credincios tradiţiilor comunităţii. Dar vremurile se schimbă şi vrând-nevrând viaţa de zi cu zi a familiei este perturbată. Tevie este nevoit să-şi schimbe abordarea, dar problemele nu se rezolvă și viața paşnicului sătuc este tulburat de ostilităţi. Comunitatea evreiască este amenințată cu distrugerea, este expulzată din sat. În ciuda acestor lucruri, speranța unui nou început continuă să le alimenteze credința.
Un muzical de succes, plin de umor, despre viața unei familii evreiești, chinuită de constrângeri și dorințe, într-o epocă istorică turbulentă, dar, mai ales, despre o lume în schimbare și valori eterne, despre tot ceea ce înseamnă umanitate, familie, credinţă, comunitate şi solidaritate.

The greatly successful story of Fiddler on the Roof – which premiered on Broadway in 1964 – takes place in the early 1900s, in a small Ukrainian village called Anatevka. The settlement of Anatevka is that of a tradition abiding, close-knit little community in which everyone has their well-known, clearly defined role, from the rabbi to the match maker, down to Tevye, the milkman, who – alongside his wife Golde, and their 5 daughters – tries to survive the difficult times.
The struggle to make ends meet and the future prospects of his daughters that are of marrying age cause no small worries for Tevye, still, he is a staunch believer in religion and tradition, however, change is taking root in his household as well, and whether he wants it or not, it disrupts the quiet, everyday life of his family. Tevye is forced to change himself and his approach, still, their problems do not subside and the life of the peaceful little village is marred by hostility and unrest. The Jewish community is threatened with destruction, they are expelled from the village, but the hope of a fresh start continues to fuel their faith.
A successful, humorous musical about the life of a Jewish family, directed by external constraints and inner desires, in a turbulent historical time, but most of all about the changing world and values that are eternal, about the meaning of humanity, family, faith, community, and solidarity.
