Vineri, 29 mai, începând cu ora 18, vă invităm la recepția lucrărilor din „Șantier”, un solo show de Dumitru Gorzo. Expoziția este curatoriată de Alex Radu, cu un design grafic/expozițional de Ioana Naniș, Cristi Matei & Justin Baroncea.

Revamped monuments for the impoverished

The only cultural vandalism accepted in Bucharest (and most of Romania) are these iron crosses that people put in places where someone dear to them died. They are everywhere, including in the very center of the city. Some ask for permission to place the crosses, but most of them are placed without it. And authorities rarely take them out. A bit like the painted bicycles in Brooklyn. The difference is that, here, they are stuck to the ground. Somehow, they have the function of a cenotaph. And they are exactly the same kind of cross that the impoverished use in the cemetery. I transform them, challenging the untouchable form.

Continuous Studio doesn’t really exist. Hooked in the present moment, it is at first just a tool to create encounters, and then it becomes a place where the artist studio can be seen as an environment of multiple failures and the rare moments of balance and small victories. Not failures in a dramatic sense, but a place where I am testing different materials, working on new forms, changing my mind, experimenting breakdowns, listening to people, talking to people, all of it producing a bunch of stuff that looks like a sedimentary depositional environment. Considering this and the fact that I am moving it in multiple locations (it started in Brooklyn and continued in Bucharest, Timișoara, Râmnicu Vâlcea, Bistrița, Resița), it becomes – independently of my intention – a tool that generates memory.

It starts like a displacement – the studio in the exhibition place for a limited time, which disappears only to reappear in a different place with a different character and dealing with different people and information. Every new Continuous Studio has bits from the previous ones: tools, unfinished works or other elements that act like witnesses. It is not vagabondage because its nature did not come from the movement, but from these temporary fixations.

„Șantier” este a patra expoziție cu Dumitru Gorzo la /SAC și a șasea la care lucrăm împreună în ultimii zece ani. Deși am simțit mereu că este mai firesc pentru mine să curatoriez expoziții de grup decât un solo show, mă entuziasmează totuși să o fac pentru un artist de a cărui practică am fost atât de apropiat. Această colaborare de lungă durată mi-a permis și o observare privilegiată a modului în care la Gorzo conceptul de „șantier” poate să devină o metaforă a unei creații aflate într-o stare de experiment permanent, și a modului în care Gorzo își transformă adesea spațiul expozițional (cu rigoarea/structura și forța/deranjul unui șantier real) într-un atelier viu, precum în seria de Continuous Studio.

Definitoriu pentru Dumitru Gorzo de acum, atât (re-)desenarea sau reluarea actualizată a unor forme (re-formarea lor) intangibile dar vibrante, contorsionate, pline de tensiuni și energii viscerale/embodied – ca într-un „expresionism abstract dezabstractizat” (Justin Baroncea) -, cât și acțiunea performativă din procesul creației și curiozitatea/mirarea activă și continuă a artistului față de materialitatea care devine co-subiect, sunt importante pentru semnificația artei lui. „Șantier” prezintă lucrări noi, create special pentru această expoziție, și cu o noutate tehnică rezultată direct din preocuparea artistului pentru materialitate ca subiect. Percepția lucrărilor este balansată ca un dans între narativul (re-)figurărilor antropormorfe și potențialul expresiv și narativ al jocurilor de planuri picturale multiple coprezente pe aceeași suprafață creând noi adâncimi.

Un nou moment de intensitate în relația continuă a lui Gorzo cu munca/creația sa, expoziția „Șantier” la /SAC @ Malmaison se conturează ca o stație/construcție acaparantă/amorsată, efemeră, colaborativă, în jurul unei etape de laborator (de „gorzolănii”).

Dumitru Gorzo (n. 1975 în Ieud/Maramureș) este unul dintre cei mai influenți artiști români contemporani, semnând primele expoziții personale de anvergură ale unui artist roman atât la MNAC (Muzeul Național de artă contemporană) în 2006, cât și la MARe (Muzeu de artă recentă) în 2025.

“Șantier” is the fourth exhibition with Dumitru Gorzo at /SAC and the sixth we have worked on together over the past ten years. Although I have always felt that it is more natural for me to curate group exhibitions than solo shows, I feel enthusiastic to do so for an artist whose practice I have been so closely involved with. This long-standing collaboration has also afforded me a privileged vantage point from which to observe how, for Gorzo, the concept of “șantier / construction site” can become a metaphor for a creative process in a state of perpetual experimentation, and of how Gorzo often transforms the exhibition space (with the rigor/structure and force/disruption of a real construction site) into a living studio, as in the Continuous Studio series.

Defining for Dumitru Gorzo today is both the (re-)drawing or updated reworking of intangible yet vibrant, contorted forms – full of visceral/embodied tensions and energies – as in a “de-abstracted abstract expressionism” (Justin Baroncea) – as well as the performative action within the creative process and the artist’s active and continuous curiosity/wonder regarding materiality, which becomes a co-subject – are important to the significance of his art. “Șantier” presents new works, created specifically for this exhibition, featuring a technical innovation stemming directly from the artist’s preoccupation with materiality as a subject. The perception of the works balances like a dance between the narrative of anthropomorphic (re-)figurations and the expressive and narrative potential of the interplay of multiple pictorial planes co-present on the same surface, creating new depths.

A new moment of intensity in Gorzo’s ongoing relationship with his work/creation, the exhibition “Șantier” at /SAC @ Malmaison takes shape as a captivating/primed, ephemeral, collaborative station/construction, centered around a laboratory phase (of “gorzolănii”).

Dumitru Gorzo (b. 1975 in Ieud/Maramureș) is one of the most influential contemporary Romanian artists, having held the first major solo exhibitions by a Romanian artist both at MNAC (National Museum of Contemporary Art) in 2006 and at MARe (Museum of Recent Art) in 2025.
