✨ About The Big Apple ✨

The Big Apple became significant very fast around 1937 in Harlem, as a “new way of experiencing social jazz dance”. It soon got to be performed at the Savoy and continued for several years.

Today the Big Apple is mostly danced socially as one particular version – a choreography by Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers as performed in a scene of the film Keep Punching in 1939. But it has been taught in many different versions and it was more a way of dancing then a strict choreography.

“We’d like to take a moment to remind the readers that The Big Apple wasn’t simply just a new dance. The Big Apple, for many, was a whole new way of experiencing social jazz dance — in a circle of dancers, based on call-and-response, with dancers or couples taking turns shining — and it was a very Black American way to experience dance.” historian Judy Pritchett, as quoted by Bobby White in “The Rise of the Big Apple”.

✨ About Open Shines, Inner Swing Framework ✨
Historically referring to solo improvisations in mambo, open shines is an inspiring phrasing for opening the space for people to shine one by one.

In the Open Shines framework, we address dance vocabulary as synchronized with developing body awareness. We focus on individual growth into personal freedom of expression.

We work on technique and, at the same time, on experimenting with movement: navigating solo jazz repertoire while exploring methods informed by contemporary dance practices, various practical and conceptual, poetical proposals to think about movement in relation to music, our body and our dance partner.
